The design
On 27 September 2023, Meta published an announcement introducing AI-powered assistants and characters. Alongside the general Meta AI assistant, it introduced nine celebrity-voiced characters, including Snoop Dogg as Dungeon Master, Tom Brady as Bru, Kendall Jenner as Billie and MrBeast as Zach, rolling out in beta on WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram, with Ray-Ban Meta glasses and Quest named as later destinations. Meta described the goal as making its AI "feel like talking to familiar people," giving each character a backstory and its own social profile. The post remains live and unedited on Meta's newsroom three years later.
What the evidence says
Meta's later record contains no follow-up statement retiring these characters. On 18 April 2024, it published an announcement rebuilding Meta AI on Llama 3 and expanding it to a dozen more countries; the post promotes one general-purpose assistant and does not name Snoop Dogg, Bru, or any 2023 character. Three months later, on 29 July 2024, Meta published an announcement for AI Studio, letting ordinary users and creators build their own AI characters for the same Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp channels the celebrity personas had used. Together the three posts document a shift, from company-built celebrity characters toward one assistant and a user-generated-character platform, inside eleven months. What they do not document, because no company statement located here says so, is that the personas were formally discontinued, when, or why.
What it asks of people
The 2023 launch asked users to treat a corporate product as a personality with "opinions and interests," built around real celebrities' images under licensing terms Meta did not detail publicly. AI Studio instead asks creators to supply the personality themselves, choosing "the content your AI is trained on... and topics to avoid," while the rebuilt Meta AI asks users to treat one assistant, not a roster of characters, as the default. Whether users who had a rapport with a celebrity-voiced character were ever notified or migrated is not addressed in the documents examined here.
Privacy and safeguards
None of the three posts sets out disclosure terms for the celebrity characters' training data or retention. The AI Studio post describes "policies and protections... in place to keep people safe" and promises visible labelling of AI-generated replies, but that safeguard was introduced for the successor product, not retrofitted onto the 2023 characters. A reader trying to learn what happened to conversations held with the original personas finds no answer in Meta's own published record.
- Does a company's own documentation actually confirm a product was retired, or only that a new one replaced it in marketing emphasis?
- What happens to data collected by an AI character that quietly stops being promoted?
- Who is accountable for continuity when a companion-like product a user relied on disappears without an announcement?
The most defensible claim here is narrower than a clean discontinuation: Meta's own publishing history shows a celebrity-fronted roster launched in September 2023 and effectively superseded, in the company's own marketing focus, by a general assistant and a user-built-character platform within the following year, without a public accounting of the transition.
