What the evidence says

The three companies' own statements do not support treating gated intimacy as one uniform pattern. Replika's documentation explicitly conditions a romantic designation and unblurred romantic imagery on payment. Character.AI's FAQ states the opposite about its own product: 'the content outputted by Characters is currently the same between c.ai and c.ai+,' meaning its subscription is described, by the company itself, as a speed and convenience upgrade rather than a content unlock. Nomi's FAQ separately states that unfiltered conversation is available generally, since, in the company's words, 'Nomi is built on freedom of expression' and conversations 'aren't restricted by arbitrary content filters,' with its paid tier instead framed around message volume, companion count, and customization depth rather than content type.

What it asks of people

Only Replika's own pages ask a user to pay specifically to unlock a designated romantic relationship and associated imagery. Nomi asks a user to pay for quantity and breadth of use rather than for a content category. Character.AI, by its own account, asks a subscriber to pay for speed and access perks with no stated change to what a Character can say.
