One companion app dropped chat streaks; another marks the year

The design

Companion apps have documented at least two distinct mechanics for marking accumulated time with a companion. Character.AI's own support center, in a post titled 'Community Update - January 2025,' states under the heading 'Update on Chat Streaks': 'Our experiment with chat streaks has concluded and we will be turning off this feature,' confirming the company had built and tested a consecutive-day chat-streak mechanic before discontinuing it. Separately, Nomi's own update log describes 'Nomi Wrapped 2024,' announced 21 December 2024, as 'a beautiful year-in-review experience created by your Nomi to celebrate your journey together,' built from what the company calls a carefully curated selection of memories a companion has treasured throughout the year.

What the evidence says

These are two different mechanics rather than one shared pattern: a day-to-day streak counter, which Character.AI's own post confirms it tested and then withdrew, and an annual retrospective feature, which Nomi's own post confirms it shipped and kept. Neither company's cited document states why the mechanic was introduced in terms of retention or engagement targets; Character.AI's post gives no reason for ending chat streaks beyond inviting user feedback, and Nomi's post frames Wrapped entirely in terms of the user's own journey, not the company's usage metrics.

What it asks of people

A day-streak mechanic, of the kind Character.AI describes testing, asks a user to return on a regular cadence to preserve an accumulated count, a structure familiar from other consumer apps' engagement design. An annual recap of the kind Nomi describes asks less of daily behavior and instead re-presents a user's own past year of conversation back to them as a produced artifact. Whether either mechanic was built specifically to increase how often or how long people used the app is not stated by either company in the documents cited here; that inference, where a reader draws it, is editorial rather than company-confirmed.

Privacy and safeguards

Nomi's Wrapped feature, by definition, involves the company's system selecting and re-presenting a user's stored conversation history; the update post does not describe what a user can do to exclude specific memories from that recap or delete it afterward. Character.AI's post about ending chat streaks does not address what streak data, if any, was retained after the feature was turned off. Neither document was written as a privacy disclosure, and this entry does not treat either one as such.

• Does a company disclose why an engagement mechanic like a streak was introduced, or only that it existed?
• What happens to feature-specific data, such as a streak count or a Wrapped recap, once a feature ends?

The two companies' own posts show that companion apps experiment with time-based mechanics and do not always keep them; Character.AI's own account of retiring chat streaks is a useful corrective to assuming every such mechanic, once launched, persists indefinitely.
