Apple's Replika rating fell to 9+, then returned to 17+, in 2023

The design

Apple's own App Store listing for Replika carries a content rating that Apple, not Replika, assigns and can change without a public announcement. An archived snapshot of the listing from 25 January 2023 shows the app rated 17+, with Apple's own advisory tags reading 'Infrequent/Mild Sexual Content and Nudity' and 'Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes' alongside a mild-profanity tag. That is the rating and advisory language Apple displayed before the Italian Garante's emergency order against Replika and the company's subsequent removal of erotic role-play, both already covered on this site.

What the evidence says

A snapshot of the same listing from 25 March 2023 shows the rating had dropped to 9+, and the sexual-content and mature-themes advisories are absent, leaving only the mild-profanity tag. By 21 May 2023, the listing had returned to 17+, though the advisory tags recorded in that snapshot again show only mild profanity, not the sexual-content language present in January. The current listing, retrieved 16 September 2026, rates the app 18+, the equivalent top tier under Apple's revised five-level ratings scale introduced after 2023. None of these snapshots states Apple's reasoning; the rating and advisory fields are Apple's own classification, and the archived pages carry no explanatory note from either company.

What it asks of people

A parent or user relying on the App Store rating to judge Replika's content is asked to trust a classification that this record shows moved twice within four months without a visible public explanation from Apple, and that, by the second reversal, no longer carried the same advisory tags it had shown the first time it reached the same numeric tier.
