Character.AI's parental tool shows screentime, not characters

The design

On 25 March 2025, Character.AI announced Parental Insights, a feature letting a teen add 'a parent or guardian's email address to their account to send a weekly activity report.' The announcement states the report would show 'daily average time spent on the platform across both web and mobile' and the 'top Characters their teen interacted with most frequently during the week,' explicitly excluding chat content: the tool 'does not include a user's chat content.' The company called it 'the first step' in a feature it expected to 'continue to evolve.'

What the evidence says

The company's own current Parental Insights FAQ, a living help-center document retrieved 16 September 2026, describes a narrower version under the name 'Family Connect': a linked adult can see 'the teen's screentime, how much time they've spent in the app and when,' with no mention of a top-characters list, and the FAQ states plainly that 'trusted adults cannot see messages, in-app content, or other activity.' Whether the top-characters detail from the March 2025 announcement remains part of the live feature is not confirmed by the current help-center language, which describes screentime alone; this is a gap between a press announcement and a living support document that a reader should not resolve by assumption.

What it asks of people

The feature is opt-in from the teen's side: the FAQ states 'either the teen or the trusted adult can turn it off at any time,' and an invited adult must 'prove they are an adult before the connection is finalized.' An unanswered invitation 'stays pending' and is 'deleted after 14 days.' Notably, the FAQ states a connected adult 'is not able to set up screentime limits' through the tool, so visibility does not come with control.

Privacy and safeguards

What is disclosed: exactly what data a linked adult can and cannot see, an adult-verification step for the parent's side of the connection, and a stated retention behavior for screentime history after unlinking, which the FAQ says 'is kept as-is.' What is not disclosed: adoption figures for the feature, or independent confirmation that the described exclusion of message content is technically enforced rather than a stated policy.
