Character.AI's own 2 August 2024 announcement of its Google licensing arrangement states that 'Dominic Perella, Character.AI's General Counsel, has stepped into the role of interim CEO,' effective immediately, following the departure of co-founders Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas to Google. Nearly a year later, on 20 June 2025, the company announced that Karandeep Anand, previously a board advisor and formerly President of Brex, had joined as permanent Chief Executive Officer, with Perella moving into a newly created role as Chief Legal Officer and SVP of Global Affairs.

What the evidence says

The two posts, read together, establish a two-step leadership sequence rather than a single event: an internal, immediate successor named the same day the founders' departure was announced, followed roughly ten months later by an external, permanent hire. Both are the company's own announcements, not independently reported appointments; Anand's post describes his prior roles at Brex, Meta, and Microsoft in the company's own words, and states that he had already spent nine months advising Character.AI's product strategy before formally joining, a detail only this source supplies.

The August 2024 post asks users to accept an internal, legal-department leader running the company through an unplanned transition, framed as a continuity measure rather than a search process.
