An App Store rating climbed twice as Character.AI grew up

The design

Apple's App Store listing for Character.AI carries an age rating that Apple derives from a developer questionnaire about content categories. A Wayback Machine capture from 7 June 2023 shows the app rated 12+, with five 'Infrequent/Mild' descriptors: cartoon or fantasy violence, alcohol/tobacco/drug references, profanity or crude humor, mature or suggestive themes, and sexual content and nudity. A capture from 22 June 2024 shows the same five descriptor categories, still at the Infrequent/Mild severity level, but the overall rating raised to 17+. The current live listing, retrieved 16 September 2026, shows the rating raised again to 18+, now with seven descriptor categories, adding horror/fear themes and guns or other weapons to the five carried since 2023.

What the evidence says

These three snapshots establish that Apple's own rating for the app climbed twice, from 12+ to 17+ sometime between June 2023 and June 2024, and again to 18+ by the current retrieval, and that the descriptor list grew from five categories to seven over the same span. None of the three listings states why the rating changed at either step, and no snapshot closer than a year apart was available to narrow the date of the first change more precisely; the record supports the direction and rough sequence of the change, not an exact date.

What it asks of people

A parent or prospective adult user relying on the App Store's rating alone is asked to trust a developer-supplied questionnaire, translated by Apple into a single age number and a severity-graded descriptor list, as a proxy for what kind of content the app's user-generated Characters can actually produce. The widening descriptor list and rising age floor ask that reader to recognize the rating as a moving target tied to the underlying product's own evolution, not a fixed classification set once at launch.

Privacy and safeguards

The App Store rating addresses content exposure, not data handling, and none of the three snapshots discusses privacy, retention, or age-verification mechanics; those are covered, separately, by Character.AI's privacy policy and by the age-assurance system it later built with Persona. The rating's rise to 18+ sits alongside, but is not the same record as, the age-assurance rollout the company announced in its own blog posts.
